1978 in Kanada als Tochter portugiesischer Einwanderer geboren hat die spritzige Nelly bereits sehr früh für Musik begeistert und beherrscht etliche Instrumente: Klavier, Posaune, Ukulele, Gitarre und Keyboard. 2000 erschien ihr Debütalbum "Whoa, Nelly", das ein voller Erfolg war. Ohrwürmer wie "I'm like a Bird" und "Turn off the Light" brachten ihr riesigen Erfolg. Kollaborationen mit Größen wie Chris Martin, Timberland oder Justin Timberlake folgten, gemeinsam mit ihrem Landsmann Bryan Adams sang sie bei der Eröffnung der Winterspiele 2010 in Vancouver. Im September 2012 erschien ihr bereits fünftes Album "The Spirit Indestructible" und sie selbst bezeichnet es als eine Mischung aus all ihren vorigen Platten.
